The world’s largest lake is the Caspian Sea. Despite its name it is actually a lake although geologically it is a small ocean. The largest lake has an area of 390,000 square kilometres. That’s more than the size of for example Germany. It has shorelines with five countries; Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Iran.
Second of the largest lakes in the world is the Michigan-Huron. It has an area of just over 117,000 square kilometres. In some rankings it doesn’t appear since it consists of two lakes (Michigan and Huron) but technically it is one body of water. The largest of the Great Lakes between Canada and the USA – if looked at individually – is the Lake Superior.
It has an area of 82,000 square kilometres. If Michigan-Huron is counted as two lakes Lake Superior would also be the largest fresh water lake. By this logic Lake Victoria in Africa would be the third largest lake and second largest fresh water lake in the world. It has an area of 70,000 square kilometres.
